About Kuala Lumpur International Airport
Overview
Kuala Lumpur International Airport lies in the Sepang district, roughly 45 kilometres south of central Kuala Lumpur in the Malaysian state of Selangor. It serves as the country's primary international gateway and one of Southeast Asia's principal aviation hubs. The airport opened in 1998, replacing the older Subang facility, which transitioned to handling turboprop and general aviation traffic.
Terminals & runways
The airport operates two passenger terminals. The Main Terminal Building, designed by Kisho Kurokawa, handles full-service carriers, while Terminal 2 (klia2) was opened in 2014 to accommodate low-cost operations. Three parallel runways oriented roughly north–south support continuous 24-hour operations. Ongoing upgrades focus on baggage systems, aerotrain replacement, and capacity enhancements across both terminals.
Airlines
KLIA is the home base of Malaysia Airlines, the national flag carrier, and a major hub for the AirAsia group, including AirAsia X for long-haul low-cost routes. Batik Air Malaysia and Malindo-related operations also use the airport. A wide range of international carriers from across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Oceania serve KLIA, reflecting its position on key regional networks.
