About Lufthansa

Lufthansa traces its modern history to 1953 and began scheduled operations in 1955. Its principal operating company, Deutsche Lufthansa AG, is part of the publicly traded Lufthansa Group, which also owns or holds interests in several European passenger airlines and aviation businesses. Lufthansa serves as the group’s German flag-carrier brand, while Lufthansa Regional connects many shorter routes through partner operations.

Frankfurt is Lufthansa’s primary hub, with Munich providing its second major connecting gateway. Its network comprises 1,260 routes serving 245 destinations across 104 countries. Key departure cities also include Dusseldorf, Berlin and Hamburg. The schedule combines dense German and European services with long-haul links to North America, Asia, Africa and other international markets.

Aircraft recorded across the operation include Airbus A319, A320 and A321 narrow-bodies, Airbus A330-200 and A330-300 wide-bodies, Airbus A340 variants, Boeing 787-8 aircraft and ATR regional turboprops, including ATR 42-500 and ATR 72 models. Cabin products vary by aircraft and route, with Economy, Premium Economy, Business and First Class offered where the assigned equipment supports them.

Lufthansa is a founding member of Star Alliance, giving eligible passengers access to a broad partner network, reciprocal status recognition and lounges subject to fare, cabin and membership rules. Its loyalty programme is Miles & More. Members can earn and redeem miles across Lufthansa Group airlines and participating partners, while status benefits depend on qualifying activity and the traveller’s membership tier.

The airline’s chief strength is the breadth of its network and the volume of connections available through Frankfurt and Munich. Those large hubs can also be demanding: transfer distances may be substantial, disruption can affect connecting itineraries, and regional services may offer different aircraft and cabin standards from Lufthansa’s mainline flights. Travellers should check the operating carrier, connection time and aircraft details before departure.

Good to know

Flying with Lufthansa — what to expect

Check Operating Carrier

Some Lufthansa-branded regional flights are operated by partner airlines. Aircraft, seating and onboard service can therefore differ from those on Lufthansa mainline services.

Allow Transfer Time

Frankfurt and Munich are large connecting airports, and reaching another gate may require a long walk or passport control. Avoid very tight self-selected connections when possible.

Baggage Varies By Fare

Checked-baggage inclusion depends on the route, cabin and fare family, while the lowest Economy fares may exclude it. Confirm the allowance displayed on your booking before travelling.

Cabins Differ By Aircraft

Long-haul aircraft may offer Premium Economy, Business and First Class, but availability and seat design vary by route and equipment. Review the aircraft and seat map before paying for a particular cabin experience.

Miles And Status

Miles & More members can earn rewards and status credit on eligible Lufthansa and partner flights. Accrual rates and benefits depend on the ticket, operating carrier and membership tier.

Prepare For Disruption

A large connecting network provides rebooking options, but delays at a major hub can affect several sectors. Keep contact details updated and monitor the Lufthansa app or flight notifications during travel.

Poor customer service regarding lost baggage.

EconomyPrague - Krakow
An otherwise great trip was let down by two baggage handling errors (one each way on a return journey). That's right, my baggage was misplaced on both legs. Although this is becoming common place in flights the communication to get my bag back was appalling. See moreSee less

Lost Luggage

Business ClassMunich - Budapest

Pilot advised the airport was struggling and did not have enough staff to load the plane. Promised it would be on the next flight to Budapest. 8 days later I still haven't seen my luggage. Disgusting airline. will never fly them again

Worse customer service I have ever experiences in my life

Flights were cancelled out of Munich due to weather. Fair enough, not the airlines fault but their handling of it was abysmal. Kept saying they were rebooking flights then re cancelling them. Again I had some sympathy but the communication about what was going See moreSee less

Aircraft changed and seats reassigned without legroom

Lufthansa advised the aircraft was changed and we had seats beside each other (aisle and middle) though NOT with the paid for extra legroom seats. We weren't the only ones inconvenienced and for a 10+ hour flight we found it unacceptable. Our expectation is to See moreSee less

Online check-in not working

Travelling with a group of eight we were surprised to be asked to input everyone's details for the return flight. Why were these not retained from the outbound flight?! Then having input it all we got a data collection error. Tried with mobile phone, laptop See moreSee less
