Overview
Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport lies approximately 40 kilometers west of central Taipei, in Dayuan District of Taoyuan City in northern Taiwan. It serves as the primary international gateway to the island and one of East Asia's busiest passenger and cargo airports. The airport opened in 1979 as Chiang Kai-shek International Airport, replacing Taipei Songshan as the country's main long-haul facility, and was renamed in 2006.
Terminals & runways
The airport currently operates two passenger terminals connected by a people mover, with Terminal 1 handling a mix of full-service and low-cost carriers and Terminal 2 hosting most home-based long-haul flights. A third terminal is under construction as part of a long-running expansion. Two parallel east–west runways serve continuous 24-hour operations, supplemented by extensive cargo apron facilities to the south.
Airlines
Taoyuan is the principal hub for China Airlines and EVA Air, both members of SkyTeam and Star Alliance respectively, and a focus city for low-cost carrier Tigerair Taiwan and Starlux Airlines. Major foreign carriers operating here include Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, ANA, Singapore Airlines, Korean Air, Emirates, United, and Delta, reflecting the airport's role as a regional connecting point.
