Overview
Auckland Airport sits approximately 21 kilometres south of Auckland's city centre, in the Māngere district of the Auckland region, New Zealand. It serves as the country's primary international gateway and busiest airport overall, handling the large majority of New Zealand's long-haul international traffic. The airport opened in 1966, replacing the older Whenuapai airfield as the main civil aviation hub.
Terminals & Runways
The airport operates two main terminals: an international terminal and a domestic terminal, connected by a covered walkway. Two runways serve the airfield — oriented roughly north-northeast to south-southwest — allowing simultaneous operations in varying wind conditions. The airport operates around the clock with no blanket curfew. A significant integrated terminal project has been in various stages of planning and development to modernise capacity.
Airlines
Air New Zealand is the dominant carrier and primary hub airline, operating both long-haul international and extensive domestic routes from Auckland. Jetstar maintains a focus-city presence for trans-Tasman and domestic services. Major international carriers including Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, and Air Canada serve the airport on intercontinental routes.
