Jetstar

Jetstar Airways is an Australian low-cost airline founded in 2003 and launched passenger services in 2004. It is wholly owned by the Qantas Group and was created as the group’s budget-focused carrier. Jetstar uses a simplified, optional-extras model in which the base fare generally covers the seat, while baggage, meals, preferred seating and other additions depend on the fare or bundle selected.

Sydney is Jetstar’s busiest departure hub by route count, followed by Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Cairns. Its network comprises 168 routes serving 33 destinations across 10 countries. Domestic flying is central to the operation, complemented by international links to New Zealand, Southeast Asia and Pacific leisure markets. Important destinations include Auckland, Christchurch, Singapore and Denpasar in Bali.

Aircraft types used across Jetstar’s route network include the Airbus A320, Airbus A321 and Airbus A330-200. The narrow-body Airbus aircraft are particularly suited to domestic and short-haul international flying, while larger aircraft support longer sectors. Economy is the standard cabin, with optional paid extras varying by route and aircraft; premium cabin products are available only on selected long-haul services rather than throughout the network.

Jetstar is not itself a member of Oneworld or another global airline alliance, although its parent company, Qantas, is a Oneworld member. Eligible Jetstar fares and bundles can earn Qantas Points and Status Credits through Qantas Frequent Flyer, subject to the ticket’s conditions. Travellers should check eligibility before booking because the lowest unbundled fares may provide limited or no loyalty benefits.

Jetstar’s principal strength is its broad coverage of Australian leisure routes, supported by several major departure bases and useful international links. The trade-off is that its lowest fares are deliberately unbundled, so checked baggage, meals and seat selection can raise the final price. Comparing the complete trip cost is therefore more meaningful than comparing headline fares alone, especially for families or passengers carrying substantial luggage.
