Overview
Narita International Airport lies approximately 60 kilometers east of central Tokyo in Narita, Chiba Prefecture. It serves as one of Japan's principal international gateways, handling the majority of long-haul traffic to and from the Tokyo metropolitan area. The airport opened in 1978 as New Tokyo International Airport, taking over most international services previously operated from the older, more central Haneda Airport.
Terminals & runways
The airport operates three passenger terminals. Terminal 1 primarily handles SkyTeam and Star Alliance carriers, Terminal 2 hosts Oneworld and unaffiliated airlines, and Terminal 3 is dedicated to low-cost carriers. Two parallel runways serve the airfield, oriented roughly north-south. Operations are subject to a nighttime curfew, generally between 11 PM and 6 AM, with ongoing projects to expand capacity.
Airlines
Narita serves as a major hub for All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines, both of which maintain extensive long-haul networks here. It is also a key base for low-cost carriers including Jetstar Japan, Peach, and Spring Japan. Most major international carriers from Asia, North America, and Europe operate scheduled services to Narita.
