Overview
Incheon International Airport lies roughly 48 kilometers west of central Seoul, on reclaimed land between Yeongjong and Yongyu islands in the Yellow Sea. It opened in March 2001, replacing Gimpo as the primary international gateway to South Korea. Today it functions as the country's principal long-haul hub and one of East Asia's most significant transfer points.
Terminals & runways
The airport operates two passenger terminals connected by a shuttle train, with Terminal 1 serving most foreign carriers and Terminal 2 dedicated to SkyTeam members and select partners. A separate concourse handles additional wide-body operations. Four parallel runways oriented roughly north–south support continuous 24-hour operations. Ongoing expansion work has progressively enlarged Terminal 2 and added apron capacity.
Airlines
Incheon is the primary hub for Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, along with low-cost subsidiaries Jin Air, Air Seoul, and Air Busan. Other Korean low-cost carriers including Jeju Air and T'way maintain significant operations here. The airport receives most major international long-haul carriers from North America, Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Oceania, reflecting its role as a transpacific connecting point.
