About Frankfurt Airport

Overview

Frankfurt Airport lies about 12 kilometres southwest of central Frankfurt am Main in the German state of Hesse. It is one of the busiest airports in Europe and serves as the country's primary international gateway, sitting at the heart of the continental aviation network. The site has hosted commercial aviation since 1936, with the present terminal complex developed progressively from the 1970s onward.

Terminals & runways

The airport operates two passenger terminals connected by an automated people mover, with Terminal 1 handling Lufthansa and Star Alliance traffic and Terminal 2 used by other alliances and carriers. A third terminal is under construction in the southern part of the airfield. Four runways are in use, three roughly parallel and one dedicated to landings, and a partial nighttime curfew restricts scheduled operations.

Airlines

Frankfurt is the principal hub of Lufthansa and a major base for its Cargo and regional subsidiaries, as well as Condor. Most major Star Alliance, SkyTeam and Oneworld carriers serve the airport on long-haul routes, alongside numerous European and intercontinental operators, making it one of the most connected hubs worldwide.
