About Beijing Capital International Airport

Overview

Beijing Capital International Airport sits roughly 32 kilometers northeast of central Beijing in the Chaoyang and Shunyi districts. It opened in March 1958 as the first civil airport of the People's Republic of China and grew into the country's principal international gateway, serving as the main aviation entry point to the capital and northern China for decades.

Terminals & runways

The airport operates three passenger terminals. Terminal 1 handles select domestic services, Terminal 2 accommodates a mix of domestic and international flights, and Terminal 3, opened ahead of the 2008 Olympics and designed by Norman Foster, is among the largest terminal buildings in the world. Three parallel runways oriented roughly north-south support continuous 24-hour operations.

Airlines

Beijing Capital is the primary hub of Air China, the country's flag carrier, and also serves as a base for China Southern Airlines and Hainan Airlines. A wide range of international carriers from Asia, Europe, North America, and the Middle East operate scheduled services here, making it one of the busiest and most internationally connected airports in mainland China.
