About Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport
Overview
Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport is located in Dorval, approximately 20 kilometres west of downtown Montreal, in the province of Quebec. It serves as the primary international gateway for the greater Montreal region and eastern Canada. Originally opened in 1941 as Dorval Airport, it resumed its role as Montreal's main passenger airport in 2004 after international flights were transferred back from the now-closed Mirabel facility.
Terminals & runways
The airport operates a single integrated terminal building divided into domestic, transborder, and international sectors, allowing efficient passenger flow between zones. Three runways serve the field in crossing configurations, accommodating operations around the clock without a curfew. Ongoing expansion projects include a new automated light-rail station integrated directly into the terminal, connecting the airport to the regional REM network.
Airlines
The airport is a major hub for Air Canada and a base for Air Transat, with Porter Airlines and WestJet maintaining significant operations. As a transatlantic gateway, it is served by numerous European carriers including Air France, Lufthansa, British Airways, and KLM, alongside major United States network airlines connecting to their respective hubs.
