Overview
Cape Town International Airport sits approximately 20 kilometres east of Cape Town's city centre, in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It serves as the country's second-busiest airport and the primary international gateway to the Cape region. The airport opened in 1954, replacing the earlier Cape Town Wingfield aerodrome, and has since grown into a significant hub for both domestic and continental traffic.
Terminals & Runways
The airport operates two main terminal buildings: a domestic terminal handling South African internal routes and an international terminal serving intercontinental traffic. Two asphalt runways serve the airport, oriented roughly east–west to align with prevailing winds off the Cape Flats. The facility operates around the clock with no formal curfew. Capacity upgrades and infrastructure improvements have been carried out incrementally under Airports Company South Africa.
Airlines
FlySafair, Airlink, and South African Airways maintain a strong domestic presence here. Kulula and CemAir operate focused regional services. On the international side, British Airways, KLM, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, and Emirates are among the carriers connecting Cape Town to Europe, the Middle East, and the rest of Africa.
