About Myanmar Airways International

Myanmar Airways International was established in 1993 as an international airline representing Myanmar in regional markets. It operates under the legal name Myanmar Airways International and uses the IATA code 8M and ICAO code MMA. The carrier has passed through different ownership arrangements during its history and operates commercially as a separate company from the country’s domestic-focused airlines.

Yangon is the airline’s primary hub and the centre of its scheduled network. Its eight routes serve five destinations across five countries, with Bangkok, Guangzhou, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore providing links to important commercial and aviation centres in Southeast Asia and southern China. The network is compact, making the airline principally relevant to travellers beginning or ending journeys in Myanmar rather than those seeking an extensive connecting system.

The aircraft type recorded for Myanmar Airways International is the Airbus A320, a narrow-body jet widely used on short- and medium-haul services. Cabin products, fare inclusions and seat selection options can vary by route and ticket category. Travellers should review the conditions attached to their fare, particularly for checked baggage, changes, refunds, meals and advance seat assignments.

Myanmar Airways International is not a member of Star Alliance, SkyTeam or Oneworld. It operates its own Sky Smile loyalty programme, through which eligible passengers may receive recognition and benefits when travelling with the airline. Because alliance-wide earning and reciprocal privileges are not available, members of unrelated international frequent-flyer programmes should not assume that flights will earn miles or provide status benefits.

A practical strength of Myanmar Airways International is its direct access between Yangon and several major regional gateways, which can reduce the need for an additional connection. Its limited network is also a constraint: schedules may offer fewer alternatives than larger Asian carriers if a flight is changed or disrupted. Passengers should allow sensible connection time, confirm current entry requirements and recheck operating schedules close to departure.

Good to know

Flying with Myanmar Airways International — what to expect

Compact Regional Network

The airline serves a small international network centred on Yangon. Check operating days carefully because some routes may not offer the frequency available from larger regional carriers.

Airbus A320 Flights

Services are operated with Airbus A320-family narrow-body aircraft. Seat layout and onboard amenities should be confirmed for the individual flight and fare.

Check Fare Inclusions

Baggage, meal, seat-selection and change conditions can differ by ticket type. Review the fare rules before payment rather than assuming every economy ticket includes the same benefits.

Allow Connection Time

Build a reasonable buffer into separate-ticket connections at Yangon or another gateway. A compact network can provide fewer same-day alternatives when disruption occurs.

Sky Smile Membership

Sky Smile is the airline’s own loyalty programme. Confirm eligibility and benefit rules directly with the airline, as Myanmar Airways International does not belong to a major global alliance.

Unprofessional & inferior service response

EconomySingapore - Yangon (Rangoon)
I bought an air ticket from Singapore to Yangon on 24 Mar 2023. There were four emails with two different booking reference sent by Mai Air & their payment counterpart to me on 24 Mar 2023, between 1212hrs to 1428hrs. The option cancellation email was the last See moreSee less

Unfriendly service

EconomySingapore - Yangon (Rangoon)

Took the direct flight to Myanmar. Cabin crews no smiley face welcome when boarding or aligning. They understand very minimal English. Only more friendlier to the locals. Cabin food is salty n local food. Not very appetizing.

Vacation

Today we had our flight to Yangoon. Very good organised. Nice real coffee machine after check-in. The flight was delayed and no notice of that but we had a holiday and were very relaxed. Nice small bite and a drink during the 45 minutes flight. So hard work See moreSee less
