About Blue Air
Blue Air was founded in 2004 as a privately owned Romanian low-cost airline and developed into one of the country’s most recognisable aviation brands. It used the IATA code 0B and operated under the legal name Blue Air Aviation. Financial difficulties intensified after the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Romanian state subsequently became its majority shareholder after taking control of pledged shares connected to a state-guaranteed loan.
Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport was Blue Air’s principal hub, while Bacău and Cluj-Napoca were among its other important Romanian departure points. The carrier also established bases or substantial operations elsewhere in Europe during different periods. Its network focused on European cities, Mediterranean leisure markets and routes serving Romanian communities abroad, particularly in Italy, Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom.
Blue Air primarily operated aircraft from the Boeing 737 family, including Boeing 737-800 and newer 737 MAX 8 jets. Its single-cabin, low-cost configuration placed the emphasis on economy travel, with optional extras such as checked baggage, advance seat selection, priority services and onboard purchases generally sold separately. Fare conditions and included services varied by ticket type and route.
The airline was not a member of Star Alliance, SkyTeam or Oneworld. It relied mainly on its own network and commercial partnerships rather than offering the extensive reciprocal privileges associated with a global alliance. Blue Air previously promoted customer accounts, discount subscriptions and loyalty-related benefits, but travellers should not treat any former scheme or accumulated benefit as currently usable because the airline is no longer operating scheduled flights.
Blue Air’s former strength was its broad selection of direct, price-focused links between Romania and major European markets, including routes that appealed to both leisure travellers and people visiting friends and relatives. Its decisive limitation today is that operations were suspended in September 2022 and have not resumed.
