Geneve Airport
About GVA
Overview
Geneva Airport lies approximately 4 kilometres northwest of central Geneva, straddling the Swiss-French border in western Switzerland. It serves as the principal international gateway for the Lake Geneva region, including nearby Lausanne and the French city of Annemasse. Originally opened in 1920 as a grass airfield in Cointrin, it was progressively developed into a paved international facility through the mid-twentieth century.
Terminals & runways
The airport operates a single main passenger terminal, known as Terminal 1, with the smaller Terminal 2 used seasonally for charter and additional traffic during peak winter periods. A unique French sector allows passengers to enter or exit directly into France without crossing into Switzerland. The airfield has one main paved runway oriented roughly east-northeast to west-southwest, complemented by a parallel grass strip used by general aviation. A nighttime curfew applies.
Airlines
Geneva is a major focus city for Swiss International Air Lines and serves as an important base for easyJet Switzerland, which maintains a substantial operation here. Numerous European flag carriers operate scheduled services, alongside long-haul connections from Middle Eastern and North American airlines, reflecting the city's role as an international diplomatic and financial centre.
