Zurich Airport
About ZRH
Overview
Zurich Airport lies approximately 13 kilometers north of central Zurich, near the municipality of Kloten in the canton of Zurich. It serves as Switzerland's largest airport and the country's primary international gateway, handling traffic for the wider German-speaking region. The airport opened in 1948, replacing the older Dübendorf airfield as Zurich's main civil aviation facility, and has expanded steadily since.
Terminals & runways
The airport operates three passenger terminals, designated A, B/D, and E, with the satellite Dock E used for non-Schengen flights and connected by an underground automated train. Three intersecting runways handle traffic, oriented to manage prevailing winds and noise abatement procedures. A nighttime curfew restricts movements between 23:30 and 06:00. Ongoing modernization projects continue to update terminal facilities.
Airlines
Zurich is the principal hub of Swiss International Air Lines, the flag carrier and a Lufthansa Group member, along with its regional subsidiary Edelweiss Air. Most major European flag carriers operate frequent services here, alongside long-haul connections from North American, Middle Eastern, and Asian carriers. The airport also functions as a significant node within the Star Alliance network.
