About Bahrain International Airport
Overview
Bahrain International Airport sits on Muharraq Island, roughly 7 kilometers northeast of Manama, the capital of the Kingdom of Bahrain. It serves as the country's sole commercial airport and the primary international gateway to the archipelago. Aviation activity on the site dates back to the 1930s, making it one of the oldest continuously operating airports in the Persian Gulf region.
Terminals & runways
The airport operates from a single passenger terminal, significantly expanded under the Airport Modernization Program and inaugurated in its current form in early 2021. The facility handles both international and regional traffic under one roof. A single main runway, oriented roughly northwest to southeast, supports operations around the clock, with no overnight curfew. Cargo facilities and an executive terminal occupy separate areas of the airfield.
Airlines
The airport is the home base of Gulf Air, the national flag carrier, which operates its principal hub here for connections across the Middle East, Europe, Asia and Africa. DHL maintains a notable cargo presence. Major regional and international carriers including Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, Saudia, Turkish Airlines and British Airways serve the airport with scheduled flights.
