Overview

Located in the South Pacific Ocean, Tonga lies east of Fiji and north of New Zealand, comprising roughly 747 square kilometres of land spread across a vast ocean territory. The capital, Nukuʻalofa, sits on the main island of Tongatapu. Tongan and English are both official languages, and the currency is the Tongan paʻanga. Tonga is one of the few Pacific nations never fully colonised, retaining a monarchy and a deeply traditional Polynesian culture shaped by Christianity and chiefly hierarchy.

Visa Requirements

Many nationalities, including citizens of the European Union, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand, can enter Tonga visa-free for short stays. Others may obtain a visa on arrival or in advance through Tongan diplomatic missions. Travellers should check current entry conditions with the Tongan government's immigration authority before departure, as requirements can change.
