Paraguay

Paraguay is a landlocked South American country where subtropical heat, red-earth plains, and the slow curves of the Paraguay River shape a way of life that remains distinctly unhurried — one of the continent's least-visited nations, where Guaraní is spoken as freely as Spanish.

Overview

Located in central South America and bordered by Brazil, Argentina, and Bolivia, Paraguay covers roughly 406,752 km² and is divided by the Paraguay River into two contrasting regions: the fertile, densely populated eastern Región Oriental and the vast, dry Chaco to the west. Asunción, the capital, sits on the river's eastern bank. The country uses the guaraní as its currency and holds a strong bicultural identity rooted in both Spanish colonial heritage and indigenous Guaraní tradition.

Visa Requirements

Many nationalities — particularly those from South America, North America, the European Union, and parts of Asia — can enter Paraguay visa-free for stays typically up to 90 days. There is currently no widely deployed eVisa system equivalent to some neighbouring countries, so travellers should consult Paraguay's Dirección General de Migraciones or their nearest Paraguayan consulate for current entry requirements before travelling.
