Montserrat

Montserrat is a small British Overseas Territory in the eastern Caribbean, shaped as much by volcanic catastrophe as by its lush green hills. The southern half of the island remains buried or off-limits following the devastating eruptions of the Soufrière Hills volcano that began in 1995, which erased the former capital Plymouth and displaced much of the population. What remains is a quietly resilient island where calypso tradition, Irish-Caribbean heritage, and a dramatic volcanic landscape coexist.

About Montserrat

Overview

Montserrat sits in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, roughly 40 kilometres southwest of Antigua. The functioning capital is Brades, though Plymouth — now abandoned and ash-covered — retains nominal capital status. English is the official language and the Eastern Caribbean dollar is the currency. The island blends West African, Irish, and British cultural threads into a distinctive identity sometimes called the "Emerald Isle of the Caribbean."
