Eritrea
Eritrea occupies a narrow strip of the Horn of Africa where highlands drop sharply toward one of the world's hottest coastal plains, then dissolve into the Red Sea. Italian colonial architecture lines the streets of Asmara, giving the capital an unexpectedly modernist character, while camel caravans still move through the Danakil lowlands below. The country remains largely closed to casual tourism, making firsthand information genuinely scarce.
About Eritrea
Overview
Eritrea borders Ethiopia to the south, Sudan to the west, and Djibouti to the southeast, with a long Red Sea coastline facing the Arabian Peninsula. Asmara is the capital. Tigrinya, Arabic, and Tigre are the principal languages; the nakfa is the national currency. The population is roughly split between Christian and Muslim communities, with a strong sense of hard-won national identity following decades of independence struggle.
