Benin

Benin occupies a narrow corridor of West Africa, running from a short Atlantic coastline north through savanna to the Sahel fringe. It is the acknowledged birthplace of Vodun — a living religion that shapes festivals, markets, and household shrines across the country. The south hums with lagoon villages built on stilts; the north opens into dry bush and the mud-walled compounds of the Somba people.

About Benin

Overview

Benin borders Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east, Burkina Faso and Niger to the north, with roughly 125 kilometres of Gulf of Guinea coastline to the south. The capital for most purposes is Cotonou — the economic hub — while Porto-Novo holds the official capital designation. French is the official language and the West African CFA franc is the currency. The country draws cultural identity from its Fon and Yoruba heritage and its central role in the historic Kingdom of Dahomey.
