About VIE

Overview

Vienna International Airport lies approximately 18 kilometres southeast of central Vienna, near the town of Schwechat in Lower Austria. It serves as the primary international gateway for Austria and a key transfer point between Western Europe and destinations in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The airport opened to civilian traffic in 1954, built on the site of a former military airfield established during the Second World War.

Terminals & runways

The airport operates a single integrated passenger terminal complex divided into Terminals 1, 1A, and 3, with Terminal 3 handling most Star Alliance and long-haul traffic. Two intersecting runways, oriented 11/29 and 16/34, support continuous 24-hour operations, though night flights are restricted by quota. A planned third runway, long debated, remains in extended preparatory stages.

Airlines

Vienna serves as the principal hub for Austrian Airlines, the country's flag carrier and a Lufthansa Group member, alongside its regional partners. Low-cost operations are anchored by Wizz Air and Ryanair, both maintaining substantial bases here. Major European, Gulf, and transatlantic carriers operate scheduled services, reflecting the airport's role as a meaningful European connecting point.
