About Tocumen International Airport
Overview
Tocumen International Airport sits approximately 24 kilometres east of Panama City, in Panama Province. It serves as the primary international gateway to Panama and the wider Latin American region. Opened in 1978, it replaced Marcos A. Gelabert Airport as the country's main aviation hub and has since grown into one of Central America's most strategically positioned airports.
Terminals & Runways
The airport operates two terminals: the original Terminal 1, which has been progressively expanded, and the modern Terminal 2, which opened to handle significant growth in traffic. Two parallel runways oriented roughly east–west allow simultaneous operations. The airport functions on a 24-hour basis with no curfew, supporting its role as a connecting hub across time zones.
Airlines
Copa Airlines, Panama's flag carrier and a Star Alliance member, uses Tocumen as its primary hub, operating an extensive route network across the Americas. Wingo, a low-cost subsidiary, also bases operations here. Major international carriers from North America, South America, Europe, and the Caribbean maintain scheduled services, reinforcing the airport's role as a regional connecting point.
