Kuwait International Airport
About KWI
Overview
Kuwait International Airport lies about 16 kilometers south of Kuwait City, serving as the country's sole commercial gateway and primary international airport. Originally opened in 1962 on the site of an earlier airfield dating to the late 1920s, the facility has grown alongside Kuwait's emergence as a regional financial center and remains the principal point of entry for the Gulf state.
Terminals & runways
The airport operates several passenger facilities, including the main terminal, a dedicated Sheikh Saad terminal handling general aviation and select carriers, and Terminal 4 used by Kuwait Airways. A new Terminal 2, designed by Foster + Partners, is under construction to significantly expand capacity. The airport has two parallel runways oriented roughly northwest to southeast and operates around the clock.
Airlines
Kuwait Airways, the national flag carrier, maintains its main hub here, while low-cost carrier Jazeera Airways is also based at the airport and operates an extensive regional network. Major Gulf carriers including Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, and Saudia serve Kuwait alongside Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, British Airways, and several South Asian carriers connecting expatriate communities.
