Overview
Tribhuvan International Airport lies roughly 6 kilometres east of central Kathmandu, in the Bagmati Province of Nepal. It serves as the country's sole international gateway and primary domestic hub, handling the vast majority of Nepal's air traffic. The airport was established in 1949 and has been progressively modernised, remaining the critical link between Nepal and the wider world.
Terminals & Runways
The airport operates one international terminal and one domestic terminal. A single runway, oriented roughly east–west at an elevation of around 1,338 metres above sea level, handles all traffic. Operations run around the clock, though mountain weather frequently affects scheduling. A long-discussed second international terminal has been in planning and phased development for a number of years.
Airlines
Nepal Airlines serves as the national flag carrier based here. Buddha Air and Yeti Airlines dominate domestic routes. Internationally, carriers including Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Air India, IndiGo, and several Gulf and Southeast Asian airlines maintain regular services to Kathmandu, reflecting the airport's role as a trekking and pilgrimage destination hub.
