King Abdulaziz International Airport
About JED
Overview
King Abdulaziz International Airport sits about 19 kilometres north of central Jeddah on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast. It serves as the primary gateway to the western Hejaz region and the principal point of entry for pilgrims travelling to Mecca and Medina. The airport opened in 1981, replacing the older Jeddah airfield closer to the city centre.
Terminals & runways
The airport operates Terminal 1, a large modern facility opened in the late 2010s that handles most international and domestic traffic, alongside the dedicated Hajj Terminal, distinguished by its tent-like fabric roof structures designed for seasonal pilgrim flows. Two parallel runways oriented roughly north-south support continuous 24-hour operations, with ongoing expansion work intended to increase overall capacity.
Airlines
The airport is the principal hub for Saudia, the national flag carrier, and a base for low-cost operator flyadeal. Flynas also maintains significant operations here. A wide range of international carriers serve Jeddah, including major airlines from across the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and Asia, with traffic intensifying considerably during the Hajj and Umrah seasons.
