Overview
Istanbul Airport is located in the Arnavutköy district on the European side of Istanbul, roughly 35 kilometers northwest of the city center along the Black Sea coast. It serves as Turkey's primary international gateway and one of the busiest hubs in Europe and the Middle East. The airport opened in October 2018 and progressively replaced the older Atatürk Airport, which ceased commercial passenger operations in April 2019.
Terminals & runways
The airport currently operates a single vast main terminal handling both domestic and international traffic under one roof, with additional piers and satellite concourses planned in later phases. It has multiple parallel and crosswind runways supporting simultaneous independent operations, and functions on a 24-hour basis without a night curfew. Further expansion phases will eventually add more runways and terminal capacity.
Airlines
The airport is the principal hub of Turkish Airlines, which operates an extensive long-haul and regional network from the facility, alongside its low-cost subsidiary AnadoluJet. Pegasus Airlines maintains a limited presence, while most operations of foreign carriers connect Istanbul with Europe, the Gulf, Asia, Africa and the Americas through major Star Alliance, SkyTeam and oneworld members.
