Helsinki-Vantaa Airport
About HEL
Overview
Helsinki-Vantaa Airport lies approximately 17 kilometers north of central Helsinki, in the neighboring municipality of Vantaa in southern Finland. It is the country's primary international gateway and by far its busiest airport, handling the vast majority of Finland's scheduled passenger traffic. The airport opened in 1952, originally built to serve the Helsinki Olympic Games, and has been progressively expanded ever since.
Terminals & runways
The airport operates a single integrated passenger terminal, with separate areas historically designated as Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 now linked under one roof following a major expansion completed in the early 2020s. Three runways serve the airfield, oriented to accommodate prevailing wind patterns and parallel operations. Helsinki-Vantaa runs 24 hours a day, with no formal curfew, supporting its role as a transit hub.
Airlines
Helsinki-Vantaa is the principal hub of Finnair, the country's flag carrier and a member of the Oneworld alliance, which has long marketed the airport as an efficient connection point between Europe and East Asia. Norwegian, SAS, and various low-cost carriers including Ryanair maintain regular service, alongside major European and intercontinental airlines such as Lufthansa, KLM, British Airways, and Qatar Airways.
