About CUN

Overview

Cancun International Airport sits roughly 16 kilometers southwest of central Cancun, on the Caribbean coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo. It serves as the primary international gateway to the Mayan Riviera and is consistently among the busiest airports in Mexico. The airport opened in 1974, developed alongside the planned resort city it was built to serve.

Terminals & runways

The airport operates four passenger terminals. Terminal 2 generally handles domestic and some international flights, Terminal 3 focuses on international service, and Terminal 4 is the largest and newest, opened in 2017. Terminal 1 is largely reserved for charters. Two parallel east-west runways support continuous operations, and the airport functions 24 hours a day to accommodate steady tourist demand.

Airlines

Cancun is a focus city for several Mexican carriers, including Aeroméxico, Viva Aerobus, and Volaris. It also draws an unusually broad mix of international airlines, with frequent service from major North American carriers, leading European long-haul operators, and seasonal flights from Latin America, reflecting its role as a leisure destination rather than a connecting hub.
