Overview
Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport lies about 20 kilometres east of central Athens, in the Mesogeia plain of the Attica region. It serves as the primary international gateway to Greece and the busiest airport in the country. Opened in March 2001, it replaced the older Ellinikon Airport on the Athenian Riviera, which had handled both civilian and military traffic for decades.
Terminals & runways
The airport operates with a main terminal building and a satellite terminal connected by an underground passage, handling Schengen and non-Schengen traffic under one roof. Two parallel runways oriented roughly north-south allow simultaneous operations, and the facility runs around the clock without a night curfew. Ongoing expansion projects aim to enlarge terminal capacity in response to sustained traffic growth.
Airlines
Aegean Airlines, the country's flag carrier, maintains its main hub here, alongside its subsidiary Olympic Air operating regional routes across the Greek islands and mainland. Sky Express also bases significant operations at the airport. Major European and intercontinental carriers serve Athens year-round, with seasonal expansion from numerous leisure and low-cost airlines during the summer months.
