King Khaled International Airport
About RUH
Overview
King Khaled International Airport lies approximately 35 kilometres north of central Riyadh in the Saudi Arabian capital region. It serves as one of the primary international gateways to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, alongside Jeddah and Dammam. The airport opened in 1983, replacing the older Riyadh Air Base, and was designed as a sprawling complex reflecting traditional Islamic architectural motifs.
Terminals & runways
The airport operates several passenger terminals, with Terminals 1 and 2 historically handling international traffic, Terminal 3 reserved for domestic flights, Terminal 4 dedicated to low-cost carriers, and a separate Royal Terminal for state and dignitary use. Two parallel runways oriented roughly north–south accommodate continuous 24-hour operations, and ongoing expansion projects aim to substantially increase capacity in the coming years.
Airlines
The airport is the principal hub for Saudia, the national flag carrier, and a major base for flynas and the newer Riyadh Air. Numerous Gulf, European, Asian, and African carriers operate scheduled services here, including airlines such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, British Airways, and Egyptair, reflecting Riyadh's growing role in global aviation.
