Overview
Lisbon Portela Airport sits roughly seven kilometres north of central Lisbon, within the city limits of the Portuguese capital. It serves as the country's primary international gateway and the busiest airport in Portugal. Originally inaugurated in 1942, it has grown from a modest wartime-era facility into a major Iberian hub, with successive modernisations adapting it to contemporary traffic.
Terminals & runways
The airport operates two passenger terminals: Terminal 1, handling the bulk of scheduled departures and all arrivals, and Terminal 2, dedicated to certain low-cost departures. Two intersecting runways, oriented roughly 03/21 and 17/35, share a constrained urban site. Operations run effectively around the clock, though noise-sensitive procedures apply, and capacity pressures have driven ongoing debate about a complementary airfield.
Airlines
TAP Air Portugal maintains its principal hub at Lisbon, operating an extensive long-haul network to Brazil, Africa and North America alongside dense European service. Ryanair and easyJet hold significant bases here, while SATA Azores Airlines links the archipelago. Major international carriers from across Europe, the Americas, the Gulf and Africa serve the airport on scheduled routes.
