London Gatwick Airport
About LGW
Overview
London Gatwick Airport lies approximately 45 kilometres south of central London, in West Sussex, England. It serves as the United Kingdom's second busiest airport and a major gateway to the capital, complementing Heathrow. The site began commercial operations in the 1930s, with the modern terminal era beginning in 1958 following a comprehensive redevelopment that established Gatwick as a significant international airport.
Terminals & runways
Gatwick operates two terminals: North and South, connected by an automated inter-terminal transit system. The South Terminal handles a mix of short and long-haul services, while the North Terminal accommodates additional carriers and routes. The airport functions on a single main runway, with a secondary standby runway used when the primary is unavailable. Operations run 24 hours, subject to night-time noise restrictions.
Airlines
Gatwick is a major base for easyJet, which maintains its largest operation here, alongside British Airways short and long-haul services and TUI Airways leisure flights. Wizz Air, Vueling, Norse Atlantic Airways and Ryanair operate substantial schedules, while international carriers including Emirates, WestJet, Cathay Pacific and various European flag carriers connect the airport to destinations across Europe, North America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia.
