George Bush Intercontinental Airport
About IAH
Overview
George Bush Intercontinental Airport sits roughly 37 kilometers north of downtown Houston in Harris County, Texas. It serves as the primary international gateway for the Houston metropolitan area and the wider Gulf Coast region. The airport opened in 1969 as Houston Intercontinental, replacing William P. Hobby Airport as the city's main long-haul facility, and was renamed in 1997 to honor the 41st U.S. president.
Terminals & runways
The airport operates five passenger terminals, lettered A through E, connected by an underground people mover and a Skyway train. Terminal D handles most international arrivals, while Terminals B, C, and E focus on domestic and Latin American services. Five runways, predominantly aligned northwest–southeast and north–south, support continuous 24-hour operations. Ongoing terminal redevelopment continues to modernize the central processing area.
Airlines
IAH is one of United Airlines' largest hubs, anchoring its network across Latin America, the Caribbean, and transoceanic routes. A range of major international carriers from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Mexico also operate scheduled flights here, alongside several low-cost and regional operators that connect Houston to secondary markets across the Americas.
