Overview
Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport lies roughly 30 kilometres southwest of central Rome, on the Tyrrhenian coast in the Lazio region of Italy. It serves as the primary international gateway to the Italian capital and is one of the busiest airports in southern Europe. The airport opened in 1961, replacing Ciampino as Rome's main civil aviation facility.
Terminals & runways
The airport operates from a single integrated passenger complex divided into Terminals 1 and 3, with Terminal 1 generally handling Schengen traffic and Terminal 3 covering non-Schengen and intercontinental flights. It has four runways arranged in parallel and crosswind configurations and operates around the clock. Ongoing expansion works are progressively enlarging boarding areas and modernising the eastern apron.
Airlines
Fiumicino is the principal hub of ITA Airways, the Italian flag carrier, and a focus airport for several leisure and low-cost operators. It hosts a wide roster of international carriers from across Europe, the Middle East, North America and Asia, including most major Star Alliance, SkyTeam and oneworld members serving Italy.
