Overview
Cairo International Airport is located approximately 15 kilometres northeast of central Cairo, in the Arab Republic of Egypt. It serves as the primary international gateway for the country and the wider region, handling the majority of Egypt's long-haul and intercontinental traffic. The airport opened in 1945 and has expanded considerably from its original facilities to meet growing demand.
Terminals & Runways
The airport operates three passenger terminals. Terminal 1 handles primarily domestic and some regional services, Terminal 2 serves international carriers, and Terminal 3 — the most modern facility — is the dedicated hub terminal for EgyptAir. Three runways serve the airport in varying orientations, enabling continuous 24-hour operations with no scheduled curfew. Terminal 3 underwent significant construction in the 2000s.
Airlines
EgyptAir is the dominant hub carrier, using Cairo as its global base for intercontinental, regional, and domestic routes. Air Arabia Egypt and Nile Air operate focus-city services. A broad range of major international airlines serve Cairo, including Lufthansa, British Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, and Air France, reflecting the airport's status as a major connecting point between Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
