Brussels Airport
About BRU
Overview
Brussels Airport is located in Zaventem, approximately 12 kilometers northeast of central Brussels in the Flemish Brabant province of Belgium. It serves as the country's primary international gateway and the principal aviation hub for the Brussels-Capital Region. The airport traces its origins to a military airfield established in the 1940s, and it gradually replaced the older Haren aerodrome as Belgium's main civil airport during the postwar period.
Terminals & runways
The airport operates a single passenger terminal complex divided into connected piers, including Pier A for Schengen and intercontinental flights and Pier B for non-Schengen traffic. Three runways are in use, oriented roughly northeast-southwest and east-west, allowing flexible operations under varying wind conditions. A nighttime noise abatement regime restricts movements during late hours, though the airport otherwise functions around the clock.
Airlines
Brussels Airport is the home base of Brussels Airlines, a Lufthansa Group carrier that operates an extensive European and African network from here. TUI fly Belgium and Air Belgium also maintain operations at the airport. Major international carriers including Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, British Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, United Airlines, and Turkish Airlines provide scheduled service to global destinations.
