Overview
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is located approximately 30 kilometres north of South Mumbai, in the Santacruz–Sahar area of Maharashtra, India. It serves as the primary international gateway to the country's financial capital and one of the busiest airports in South Asia. The airport traces its origins to a colonial-era aerodrome, with the modern facility substantially developed through the late twentieth century.
Terminals & Runways
The airport operates two main terminals: Terminal 1 handles domestic low-cost services, while the modern Terminal 2, opened in 2014, consolidates international and full-service domestic operations under one roof. Two intersecting runways mean only one can operate at a time, creating a single-runway effective capacity. The airport operates around the clock with no formal curfew, though runway constraints limit simultaneous movements.
Airlines
Air India and IndiGo maintain significant bases here, with IndiGo treating Mumbai as a major focus city. Vistara and Air India Express have historically operated substantial operations. Virtually all major international carriers serving India include Mumbai on their networks, including Emirates, British Airways, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, and Cathay Pacific.
