About ATL

Overview

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport sits about 11 kilometers south of downtown Atlanta, in the U.S. state of Georgia. It serves as the primary international gateway for the southeastern United States and is consistently ranked among the busiest airports in the world by passenger traffic. The site opened as Candler Field in 1925 on a former auto racetrack, evolving steadily into its current form.

Terminals & runways

The airport operates two main terminal complexes — the Domestic Terminal on the west side and the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal on the east — connected by seven parallel concourses (T and A through F) linked by an underground people mover. Five parallel east-west runways handle simultaneous operations around the clock, with no overnight curfew. Ongoing capital improvement programs continue to modernize concourses and landside facilities.

Airlines

The airport is the principal hub and headquarters base of Delta Air Lines, which operates the majority of flights here, alongside its regional affiliates. Southwest Airlines maintains a significant focus operation. International service is provided by a wide range of carriers connecting Atlanta to Europe, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
