Overview
Stockholm Arlanda Airport lies approximately 37 kilometres north of central Stockholm, in the municipality of Sigtuna. It is Sweden's largest airport and the principal international gateway for the country, also serving as a major hub for the Nordic region. The airport opened to scheduled traffic in 1962, gradually replacing the older Bromma Airport, which had become constrained by its urban location.
Terminals & runways
Arlanda operates four passenger terminals: Terminals 2 and 5 handle international flights, while Terminals 3 and 4 are used primarily for domestic services. The airport has three runways, two oriented roughly north-south and one in a crosswind configuration, allowing simultaneous operations. Arlanda functions around the clock, though noise restrictions apply during night hours, and ongoing modernisation projects continue to upgrade terminal facilities.
Airlines
Arlanda is the main hub for Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) and a key base for Norwegian Air Shuttle. BRA Braathens Regional Airlines maintains a significant presence on domestic routes. Major international carriers serving the airport include Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, British Airways, Finnair, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, and several transatlantic operators connecting Stockholm with North American and Asian destinations.
