Volotea

Volotea is a Spanish low-cost airline founded in 2011 by Carlos Muñoz and Lázaro Ros, who had previously established Vueling. Commercial operations began in 2012. The privately owned carrier is headquartered in Asturias, Spain, and has built its identity around direct services linking small and medium-sized European cities, including markets that larger network airlines often serve only through connecting hubs.

Rather than relying on one dominant home airport, Volotea operates a decentralized network with multiple bases across Europe. Its busiest departure point is Nantes, followed by Venice, Bordeaux, Palermo and Strasbourg. The airline operates 68 routes serving 30 destinations across 5 countries, including Ajaccio, Bastia, Lille, Montpellier, Palma, Alicante and Bari. Much of the schedule focuses on domestic, Mediterranean and leisure-oriented European travel.

Volotea has operated the Boeing 717-200, an aircraft closely associated with the airline's earlier growth, although its present-day fleet is based on Airbus A319 and A320-family aircraft. Cabins use a single-class, all-economy layout typical of a low-cost carrier. The basic fare generally covers the flight and a limited personal item, while larger cabin baggage, checked luggage, preferred seating and other extras depend on the fare or options purchased.

The airline is not a member of Star Alliance, SkyTeam or Oneworld and does not offer a conventional mileage-based frequent-flyer programme. Instead, it markets Megavolotea, a paid membership product that can provide eligible subscribers with fare discounts and savings on selected extras. Benefits, renewal terms and traveller eligibility should be reviewed carefully, particularly by passengers who fly with Volotea only occasionally.

Volotea's principal strength is its selection of nonstop routes between regional cities, which can eliminate lengthy connections through major European airports. The trade-off is that many services are seasonal or operate only on selected days, leaving fewer alternatives if a flight is disrupted. Travellers should also compare the complete price after adding baggage and seat choices, since the lowest advertised fare may include only a limited set of services.
