About Sounds Air
Sounds Air is a privately owned New Zealand regional airline founded in 1986. Despite occasional directory listings associating it with South Africa, the carrier is based in New Zealand and operates under the IATA code S8. It began by linking Wellington with Picton across Cook Strait and has developed into an important provider of scheduled air services for smaller communities.
Wellington is the airline’s principal operating base and the focal point of much of its network. Sounds Air serves regional destinations including Picton, Blenheim, Nelson, Westport, Taupo, Christchurch, Wanaka and Paraparaumu, although individual routes and frequencies can change. Its services are especially useful where driving requires a long journey or a Cook Strait crossing.
The fleet is built around single-engine turboprop aircraft suited to short regional sectors, notably the Cessna 208 Caravan and Pilatus PC-12. Flights use a single-cabin layout rather than separate business and economy classes. Service is straightforward, with compact cabins, limited onboard amenities and an emphasis on transporting passengers efficiently between regional airports.
Sounds Air is not a member of Star Alliance, SkyTeam or Oneworld and does not operate a conventional points-based frequent-flyer programme comparable with those of larger international airlines. Tickets and conditions are managed directly through the carrier, and travellers should not assume that fares, baggage or benefits connect with Air New Zealand or another airline serving the same airports.

Save my holiday
Sounds Air pulled through in a pinch when my ferry from Wellington to Picton had been cancelled. I'm only in New Zealand for one week so all my bookings were very tight and left no room for errors. Perhaps that was my first mistake but my second had been not… See more to just initially book with Sounds Air! They're small but mighty and even though I wasn't able to make my bus to Kaikoura, I was able to meet a friendly Kiwi willing to take me themself. Holiday saved.

best little airline in NZ
very impressed with Sounds Air, I did a 1 day return flight Taupo > Wellington > Taupo. fantastic 9 seater aircraft, very smooth flight apart from the in and out of Wellington which is notoriously bumpy on ant aircraft. Too easy , flying like it should be
This is flying, the price of the flight from Wanaka to Christchurch is worth it for the scenery alone. Amazing service, amazing crew. The landing was the best ever.

Here to there and back again three days later.
Very efficient, timing was good. Friendly staff, easy check-in. No frills, but a perfect way to get across the Strait. Could be hard to get in if you are elderly or not so agile. We had a smooth, quick flight. We noticed a few people had transported their… See more animals (in cages of a designated size). Long term parking at the airport made the whole experience super easy for us! We booked online, easy process. Limited flights to choose from, not offering all services every day. We just worked our holiday around our booking. Price, not so cheap but for the convenience it was worth it!

Lovely staff
Lovely staff, great slights over all the wineries. Small plane with not much space. Probably could offer candy as my wife had trouble unblocking her ears which became quite uncomfortable. Flew from Wellington which is an artwork in itself
