RwandAir

RwandAir is Rwanda’s national carrier and a scheduled, full-service airline headquartered in Kigali. Established in 2002 and beginning operations in 2003, it developed from the country’s earlier national aviation activities into a government-owned airline serving Rwanda’s regional and international transport needs. The carrier uses the RwandAir name and the IATA code WB, with its identity closely associated with Rwanda’s role as a growing business and tourism destination.

Kigali International Airport is RwandAir’s primary hub and the central connection point for its network. The airline serves 17 destinations across 12 countries through 34 routes. Its schedule links Kigali with cities in East, Central and Southern Africa, alongside selected services to the Middle East and Europe. Notable points include Brazzaville, Dubai, Mombasa, Addis Ababa, Brussels, Bujumbura, Dar Es Salaam, Entebbe and Johannesburg, while domestic services include Gisenyi and Kamembe.

The fleet recorded for RwandAir includes Airbus A330-200 wide-body aircraft, Boeing 737 family jets and De Havilland Canada DHC-8 Dash 8 turboprops. Boeing types include the 737-500 and 737-800, allowing the airline to match aircraft capacity with regional and medium-haul demand. The A330 supports longer international sectors, while the Dash 8 is suited to shorter routes. Cabin products vary by aircraft, with economy and premium cabins available on relevant services.

RwandAir is not a member of Star Alliance, SkyTeam or Oneworld, although passengers may encounter individual commercial partnerships and codeshare arrangements. Its own loyalty programme is Dream Miles, through which eligible travellers can earn and redeem miles and receive benefits according to membership tier and fare conditions. Travellers connecting beyond RwandAir’s network should check whether baggage can be transferred through and whether loyalty benefits apply across each partner-operated segment.

A principal strength of RwandAir is the connectivity it provides through Kigali, particularly for journeys linking cities across different parts of Africa. Its mixed fleet also supports routes ranging from short domestic sectors to long-haul services such as Brussels–Kigali. The comparatively compact network can make connections straightforward, but it also means some destinations may have limited weekly frequencies. Schedule changes can therefore have a greater effect than on larger airlines, so passengers should allow sensible connection time and monitor their booking.
