About Polar Air Cargo Worldwide, Inc.

Polar Air Cargo was founded in 1993 and began scheduled operations that May with a leased Boeing 747-100. It received certification as a United States scheduled all-cargo carrier in 1994. Polar became part of Atlas Air Worldwide in 2001 and, after a long-running joint venture with DHL Express ended in 2025, became a wholly owned Atlas Air Worldwide subsidiary. Its corporate headquarters are in White Plains, New York.

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is a principal operating hub, reflecting Polar’s close association with the express-freight market. Its scheduled network links major cargo gateways in North America and Asia, supported by additional connections, interline arrangements and road-feeder services. Airports such as Los Angeles, Anchorage and Hong Kong also play important roles in its transpacific operation, although individual routings and frequencies can change with freight demand and customer requirements.

Polar operates an all-Boeing long-haul freighter fleet built around the 747-8F and 777F, also described by the airline as the 777-200F. These aircraft are designed for heavy and outsized intercontinental cargo rather than passenger transport. The 747-8F’s opening nose door is especially useful for unusually long shipments. Polar consequently has no passenger cabins, seat classes, meals, carry-on allowance or conventional ticket products; its service is sold as scheduled airport-to-airport freight capacity.

The airline does not belong to Star Alliance, SkyTeam or Oneworld, whose benefits primarily concern passenger travel. It also has no consumer frequent-flyer programme. Polar instead works with freight forwarders and other cargo customers, while its relationship with DHL Express has historically supplied substantial anchor traffic and shaped demanding operational-performance standards. Cargo booking, shipment tracking and customer support are handled through specialist commercial channels rather than passenger reservation systems.

Polar’s main strength is its specialist long-haul freight capability, particularly the combination of high-capacity 747-8F aircraft and efficient twin-engine 777 freighters serving major economic regions. Its network is less straightforward for general travellers to interpret because schedules are designed around cargo flows and can be revised seasonally. Anyone attempting to travel as a passenger should choose another airline: Polar carries freight and does not sell ordinary passenger seats.
