La Costeña was founded in 1991 as a Nicaraguan regional airline specializing in domestic scheduled services. It later became part of the airline group associated with TACA and subsequently Avianca Holdings, while continuing to trade under its established local identity. The carrier ceased operating in 2020, so it should be regarded as a former airline rather than a current booking option.
The airline’s principal base was Augusto C. Sandino International Airport in Managua. From there, it connected the capital with destinations that were difficult or time-consuming to reach overland, including Bluefields, Puerto Cabezas, the Corn Islands and several communities in Nicaragua’s interior and Caribbean regions. Its network was overwhelmingly domestic and served both local residents and leisure travellers.
La Costeña operated a small turboprop fleet suited to short runways and lightly trafficked regional routes. Aircraft associated with the carrier included ATR 42s and Cessna 208B Grand Caravans, with other commuter types appearing during its history. Flights generally offered a single-class cabin and a straightforward regional service rather than the multiple cabin products found on larger international airlines.
The airline was not a member of Star Alliance, SkyTeam or Oneworld in its own right. Through its relationship with Avianca, passengers could use LifeMiles on eligible services during relevant periods, although participation and benefits depended on the route and fare. Historical loyalty arrangements should not be treated as active because La Costeña no longer operates.
La Costeña’s main strength was the practical air access it provided to isolated parts of Nicaragua, where surface journeys could be lengthy or complicated. 2 hours late both flights - avoid if you can!
Flew twice to and from Big Corn: and both times over 2.5 hours late delayed on each flight. No notice or communication until we arrived 2 hours before scheduled departure. Hopeless and try to avoid if you can

Terrible Service - Overbooked
Return morning flight from Big Corn to Managua was overbooked and had to wait 3 hours for another plane to be sent from Managua. Treated as “first come first served” by the airline, they say the “plane is delayed” but clearly all the passengers before us got… See more on their flight and left on time. Considering the price you pay for such a short flight it left us with a sour taste in mouth after a pleasant and relaxing time on little Corn. Staff unfriendly and unhelpful. Also on arriving (Managua to Big Corn) we were singled out and searched for no apparent reason. Apparently the dog “showed interest” in our bags but clearly the dog couldn’t have cared less. Looking for an excuse to rifle through our bags and open even single thing (souvenir bag by souvenir bag) After 40min we were extremely lucky we didn’t miss the Panga to Little Corn. Overall experience with La Costena, AWFUL, avoid them if you can!

A necessary flight
Flew Managua to Blue Fields and back. Service pretty good. A bit bazaar on the return leg not even having a boarding pass. Security does riffle through bags, and I have heard you need to keep an eye on them. We locked our bags so that security would have to… See more ask us to unlock for them to search. We were not asked, and therefore avoided any theft. Flight is about an hour. Prop plane was old but seemed safe enough. Plane was full both ways and on time.

Flexible and Helpful Staff
I haven't flown yet, but me and a group of people will be flying from Managua to Big Corn Island in a month and I am so impressed already by the great service from Costena Airlines. We were only able to book six members of our group before the flight we wanted… See more sold out. MONEY STOLEN BY SECURITY LADY CHECKING BAGS IN BIG CORN
Count your money before and after having your hand luggage checked by the security staff when entering the gate. We had $50 stolen from a purse in our hand luggage by the lady checking bags. We recently flew La Costena from Managua to the Corn Islands (not Mexico City as TripAdvisor did not recognize Big Corn Island, Aug 2018) and I was really happy with the service. This was our first time to Nicaragua and we were worried about our connection and… See more about flight changes caused by the political situation there. The manager, Bismark, was really helpful. We had one flight change caused by the airport (MGA) that changed the day of our arrival and he was able to modify our reservation without charge. Also, we were running late on our flight from Mexico City (due to Aeromexico) and I let him know what was happening and he delayed the flight out to Big Corn for a bit so we could make it. Thank you for helping make our Vacation great.
