KM Malta Airlines

KM Malta Airlines is Malta’s state-owned airline and began operations in March 2024 as the successor to the former Air Malta. It retained the familiar KM designator and Maltese national identity while operating as a commercially focused carrier. Its ownership and strategic role reflect Malta’s dependence on reliable air links for tourism, business travel and connections with the rest of Europe.

The airline’s primary hub is Malta International Airport, from which it serves a network of 30 destinations across 17 countries on 75 routes. Its schedule is concentrated on European markets, with notable links to London, Paris, Munich, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Milan, Athens, Marseille and Catania. The network also includes selected services connecting Malta with North Africa and Eastern Europe, including Benghazi, Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

Aircraft types associated with the airline’s operational record include the Airbus A310, A319, A320 and A330-200 families, together with the Embraer ERJ-195. The narrow-body Airbus types are suited to the short- and medium-haul routes that form the core of the network, while larger aircraft have appeared in historical or operational records. Travellers can generally choose between economy and business-class products, although the exact seating, catering and inclusions depend on the aircraft and fare purchased.

KM Malta Airlines is not a member of Star Alliance, SkyTeam or Oneworld. It may nevertheless use commercial partnerships, interline arrangements and codeshares to extend connectivity beyond destinations served directly. Its loyalty offering is KM Rewards, through which eligible travellers can receive benefits under the programme’s current rules. Passengers should verify earning eligibility and partner recognition before booking, particularly when an itinerary includes another operating carrier.

A major strength is the breadth of direct connectivity offered from a small island market, especially to important European gateways that provide onward travel options. Malta International Airport is also comparatively compact, which can make transfers straightforward. The network is more limited than those of larger European airlines, however, and some routes may operate seasonally or only on selected days. Schedule changes can therefore have a greater effect when there is no same-day alternative flight.
