About Fiji Airways

Fiji Airways is Fiji's national airline and traces its origins to 1947, when aviator Harold Gatty established Katafaga Estates Limited, later known as Air Pacific. The carrier adopted the Fiji Airways name in 2013, reviving an identity used earlier in its history. It is government-owned and operates scheduled passenger services under the FJ airline code.

Nadi International Airport is the airline's primary hub, while Suva is an important base for domestic and regional operations. Its network covers 24 destinations across 11 countries on 62 routes, connecting Fiji's islands with other South Pacific nations and major gateways including Auckland, Honolulu and Los Angeles. Domestic points include Suva, Savusavu, Taveuni and Kadavu.

Aircraft associated with Fiji Airways operations have included Boeing 737-700, 737-800 and 737-900 variants, alongside earlier Boeing 747-400 and MD-83 equipment. Regional and domestic flying has used ATR aircraft, including the ATR 42-500, and De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otters. Cabin products and service levels vary by aircraft and route, with more extensive cabin choices generally offered on longer international flights.

Fiji Airways is a full member of the Oneworld alliance, giving eligible passengers access to reciprocal earning, redemption and status benefits across participating airlines. Its own loyalty programme is Tabua Club, which offers tier-based benefits such as priority services and additional baggage allowances, subject to membership level, fare and route conditions.

The airline's main strength is its geographically useful Nadi hub, which links island destinations with Australia, New Zealand, North America and the wider Pacific. Connections can be convenient for multi-island or trans-Pacific journeys, although schedules on thinner regional routes may be less frequent. Travellers should therefore allow sensible connection margins and check whether domestic sectors are operated by smaller regional aircraft.

Good to know

Flying with Fiji Airways — what to expect

Nadi Connections

Nadi is the principal connecting hub for international journeys. Allow extra time when transferring between international and domestic services, particularly if baggage must be rechecked.

Regional Aircraft

Some domestic and short regional flights use ATR or Twin Otter aircraft with smaller cabins and more limited baggage space. Cabin-bag restrictions may therefore be tighter than on long-haul services.

Baggage Conditions

Baggage allowances depend on the fare, cabin, route and operating aircraft. Check the allowance shown on the booking before arriving at the airport, especially for journeys involving island sectors.

Cabin Variation

Seat design, entertainment and meal service vary considerably between long-haul aircraft and smaller regional equipment. Review the operating aircraft and included services for each individual flight.

Alliance Benefits

As a Oneworld member, Fiji Airways provides reciprocal benefits to eligible alliance-status travellers. Lounge access, priority handling and baggage privileges depend on status, itinerary and airport facilities.

Island Schedules

Services to smaller Fijian islands may operate less frequently and can be affected by weather or operational conditions. Avoid very tight onward arrangements and confirm the latest schedule before travel.

Crew ignored us - knew who we were didn’t serve us the correct food or drinks

This was our second Fiji Air flight. During the first one, they refused to give us our paid up selected seats, from Hawaii to Nadi. This time flying from Nadi to Auckland, we were careful and noticed that once again they had not given us our pre-paid, See moreSee less

Overall our flights to and from Fiji were lovely. The meals were fresh and filling and the team kept my coffee coming. In flight movies were okay, older movies available on Netflix etc so no new releases. Our checked baggage was damaged during transit so See moreSee less

Entirely atrocious customer service

EconomySan Francisco - Melbourne
I was advised in Melbourne, on way to USA, to specifically, pre-purchase my excess luggage, online before flying back as I'll save money. We did just that and they charged a huge amount but, we were told it was the cheapest method in Melbourne. When we came to See moreSee less
