About Avianca Costa Rica

Avianca Costa Rica traces its origins to 1945, when Líneas Aéreas Costarricenses, commonly known as LACSA, was established. It later became part of the airline group now identified with Avianca and adopted its current name. The carrier retains Costa Rican operating credentials and the LR designator while its flights, reservations and customer services are presented through Avianca’s integrated brand and commercial platform.

The airline’s primary hub is Juan Santamaría International Airport near San José. It serves 31 destinations across 16 countries through 73 routes, with San Salvador, Guatemala City, Los Angeles and Managua also among its busiest departure points. Its network links Costa Rica with Central America, North America and South America, including cities such as Bogotá, Lima, Medellín, Mexico City and Panama City.

Aircraft used across these operations include Airbus A319, A320 and A321 narrow-body jets, Embraer ERJ-190 regional jets, ATR turboprops and some Cessna light aircraft. The Airbus A320 family forms the most familiar passenger experience on trunk routes. Cabin configuration and service vary by aircraft, fare and operating carrier, with Economy seating and selected premium seating or cabin options available on applicable flights.

Avianca participates in Star Alliance, allowing eligible travellers to access connecting services and reciprocal benefits across the alliance’s international network. Its frequent-flyer programme is LifeMiles, through which members can earn and redeem miles on qualifying Avianca, Star Alliance and other partner flights. Mileage accrual, lounge access and priority services depend on the purchased fare, membership tier and operating airline.

The airline’s main strength is the breadth of connectivity available from Costa Rica through Avianca’s wider Latin American network. Its longest route is the nonstop service between Los Angeles and San José, covering about 4,382 km. A practical challenge is that flights may use different Avianca group operators and aircraft types, so cabin layouts, baggage inclusions and onboard service can differ between otherwise similar itineraries.

Good to know

Flying with Avianca Costa Rica — what to expect

Check Operating Carrier

A flight sold under the Avianca brand may be operated by a different group airline. Review the operating-carrier details because aircraft, seating and onboard service can vary.

Fare Inclusions Vary

Baggage, seat selection and ticket-change conditions depend on the fare purchased. The least expensive option may include only a personal item, so compare inclusions before booking.

Allow Connection Time

San José is the primary hub, while San Salvador and Guatemala City are important connecting points. Allow sufficient transfer time, especially when an itinerary involves immigration or a change of operating carrier.

Mixed Aircraft Types

Services can use Airbus narrow-body jets, regional aircraft or turboprops depending on the route. Seat dimensions, storage space and premium options therefore are not uniform across the network.

Use LifeMiles Details

Add your LifeMiles number before departure if the fare qualifies for mileage credit. Keep the ticket receipt and boarding pass until the miles have posted correctly.
