Air North

Air North is a Canadian scheduled airline founded in 1977 as Air North Charter and Training. It is based in Whitehorse and has developed a distinct identity as a Yukon-focused carrier serving residents, business travellers and visitors. The company is privately held and entirely Yukon-owned, with ownership interests that include local shareholders, employees and the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation’s investment interests. It also undertakes charter and cargo work alongside scheduled passenger operations.

The airline serves seven destinations within Canada across 13 routes. Dawson City and Whitehorse are its busiest departure points by route count, followed by Inuvik, Old Crow and Edmonton. Its network links the Yukon communities of Whitehorse, Dawson City and Old Crow with Inuvik in the Northwest Territories and the western Canadian cities of Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary. Whitehorse remains the principal operational base and connecting point for much of the network.

Aircraft types associated with Air North’s operations include the Boeing 737 and the British Aerospace/Hawker Siddeley HS748. Boeing 737 aircraft are suited to longer links between Yukon and larger western Canadian cities, while the HS748 has a historical role in northern and regional flying. Scheduled passenger services generally use an economy-focused cabin rather than multiple service classes. The onboard offering varies with aircraft, route length and operating requirements.

Air North is not a member of Star Alliance, SkyTeam or Oneworld, and it does not operate a conventional points-based frequent-flyer programme. Instead, it offers practical fare products such as selected flight passes and connector fares for eligible itineraries involving other airlines. These products have specific route, booking and travel conditions, so passengers should check the applicable rules before purchase rather than expecting alliance-style earning, redemption or status benefits.

Air North’s principal strength is its focus on northern connectivity, particularly links between smaller Yukon communities and major western Canadian gateways. Local operational experience is valuable on routes where geography, weather and limited alternatives can complicate travel. The corresponding challenge is frequency: services to smaller communities may operate only on selected days, leaving less flexibility after a disruption. Travellers making separate onward connections should therefore allow substantial time between flights.
