Aegean Airlines

Aegean Airlines is a Greek scheduled carrier whose origins date to 1987, when Aegean Aviation was established. It began scheduled passenger operations in 1999 and later expanded through consolidation, including the acquisition of Olympic Air. Aegean is publicly listed on the Athens Stock Exchange and serves as the group’s principal jet-airline brand, while Olympic Air supports many domestic and regional services. The company is headquartered in Greece.

Athens International Airport is Aegean’s primary hub and its largest departure point by route count. Thessaloniki and Heraklion are also important bases, while Moscow and Munich feature prominently among its departure airports. The airline serves 39 destinations across 21 countries through 112 routes. Its network connects Greek mainland cities and islands with European markets and includes destinations such as Brussels, Frankfurt, Larnaca, Düsseldorf and London.

Aircraft associated with Aegean’s operations and development include the Airbus A319, A320 and A321 families, with the narrow-body Airbus fleet forming the backbone of its jet services. Earlier operations included the Boeing/McDonnell Douglas MD-81, while De Havilland Canada DHC-8-400 turboprops are used within the wider group’s regional network. Aegean generally offers Economy and Business Class, with fare inclusions, baggage and flexibility varying by cabin and ticket type.

Aegean joined Star Alliance in 2010, allowing eligible passengers to earn benefits and connect across the alliance’s international network. Its loyalty programme, Miles+Bonus, supports earning and redemption on Aegean, Olympic Air and participating partner airlines. Depending on membership tier and itinerary, travellers may receive lounge access, priority services or additional baggage. Codeshare and alliance connections extend the practical range of journeys beyond Aegean’s own 39 destinations.

Aegean’s principal strength is its ability to combine domestic Greek coverage with international connections through Athens. This is especially useful for travellers continuing to regional cities or islands, although seasonal demand can affect schedules and frequencies. The least expensive fares may include tighter baggage, seat-selection or change conditions, so comparing fare families is important. Athens and major island airports can also become busy during the summer peak, making adequate connection time advisable.
